January 13th is National AMBER Alert Awareness Day PDF Print E-mail
In honor of the creation of the AMBER Alert Program, January 13th is National AMBER Alert Awareness Day. The program was created in honor of Amber Hagerman, a nine-year-old child who was abducted and murdered in 1996. The program, operated nationwide and coordinated on a national level by the Department of Justice, is a partnership between law-enforcement agencies, broadcasters, and transportation agencies. In the most serious child-abduction cases an urgent bulletin is released to the public that includes a description of the child and the suspected abductor. By broadcasting this information to millions of people, there is a better chance of a quick, safe recovery of the child than if law enforcement was working alone.

AMECO members across the country work to educate law enforcement and the public on the AMBER Alert Program. AMECO member Texas Center for the Missing is the AMBER Alert Administrator for the greater Houston area. They offer monthly training sessions for law enforcement where local police are taught when and how to issue an AMBER Alert.
