State Clearinghouses

WHAT IS A State Clearinghouse?

Since 1984, every State was mandated to have a clearinghouse. Most of the State Clearinghouses are attached to the State Attorney General's office because they work with law enforcement to track missing children's cases. However, some State Clearinghouses are part of a state's social services. When a child goes missing, federal law mandates that law enforcement must immediately enter a missing child report in the NCIC system as soon as the custodial guardian provides the information. Once the missing child report is filed, law enforcment throughout the United States and Canada will have access to the information.

The State Clearinghouses are all required to track cases of missing persons and to provide resources to law enforcement and the searching families. However, all State Clearinghouses do not offer the same resources. Consequently parents and caregivers should contact their State Clearinghouse to find out what assistance they can provide. If a child has gone missing to another state, then parents and caregivers should also contact the State Clearinghouses in that other state in an effort to determine additional services that may enhance the search effort. AMECO member agencies often act as a liason wtih with state clearinghouses to assist the families of missing children and the local law enforcement who lead the case investigation.
